What’s in an Eye?

By Liz Oleksa

When you look into my eyes, what do you see?
When I look at them, I just see plain, old me.
But look deeper than that, NOW tell me what you view.
When I look in your eyes, I don’t see just the face of you.
I look deeper than the skin, all the way to the heart.
I can see your emotions and kindness,
Your feelings where they start.
I look into your eyes, all glittery and true,
When I think to myself, why can’t I be like you?
Loving kindness seeps through and made of gold is your heart.
At least that’s what people tell you,
And you’re always so smart.
How can I learn to be, and act just like you?
With such acceptance and glowing heart,
And room to take in others, too!
It doesn’t matter what they look like,
Nor the color of their skin.
It’s what is in your heart, and what you give from within.
I don’t have to try to be like you,
‘Cause I, myself, am enough.
I just need to see past the outside,
Even though that can be real tough.
We together are wonderful people,
Just look in our eyes!
You’ll learn to see what I mean, it’ll just take some time.
But trust me on that one,
It’s much better when you can see,
Not just what’s on the outside,
But on the inside of you and me.
It took my health taking my eye sight,
Leaving me completely blind,
To finally begin to realize,
I am truly one-of-a-kind.
There are no others like me,
And that is most certainly okay,
Because I am one very special person
Who has found her own way.
You showed me through kindness,
What true love can be.
You showed unconditional acceptance,
And taught me to find the real me.
I am my own person,
Unique, beautiful and true.
I am the beautiful person I am,
Because of you!
Thank you for teaching me,
And for helping to guide my way.
For your unbelievable insight,
Has and will forever brighten my day.
Your patience and wisdom,
Has truly let me see,
That the greatest gift of all,
Is me, being able to love me!!
