By Thomas Reid, PCB Convention Coordinator
At this early date, I can only share some specific details and a bit of our plans for this year’s program.
First, here are the details. Our 2015 Convention theme is “Independence: A Collaborative Approach.” Mark your calendars today if you haven’t already done so. The Convention will begin on Thursday, October 15 and end on Sunday, October 18, 2015. The program will take place at the Crown Plaza Harrisburg-Hershey in Harrisburg, PA: 23 South Second Street Harrisburg, PA 17101. The room rate is only $89 per night, so reserve your room today by calling 717-234-5021. Remember, you don’t have to wait for convention registration to begin in order to make your hotel reservations. Act now and assure you have a room at the PCB rate.
The Convention Program & Planning Committee (CPPC) recently distributed an email to the PCB Chapter Leadership informing them of the opportunities for chapters to get involved in sponsoring events during the convention. The fact that both the 2015 and 2016 conventions are scheduled to be held in Harrisburg encouraged the CPPC to identify opportunities for sponsorship.
In the majority of past conventions, our committee was fortunate to have the assistance of a host chapter – the chapter located in the convention site city. Host chapters provide many benefits both to the CPPC and those attending the convention. These chapters assist the CPPC with establishing local accessible tours for our members. This includes finding a suitable location, assisting with details, securing transportation and often helping to offset financial costs.
With multiple conventions already held in Harrisburg within the past five years, the CPPC realizes it would not be fair to ask the Capital City Chapter to alone fulfill this role. While this chapter has been generous with both their time and money, we now have an opportunity for other chapters to contribute.
The CPPC has developed the means by which any chapter can share their chapter’s unique personality or expertise by sponsoring one or more of the many events held during the convention. Below is a list of possible events, but the CPPC is open to other suggestions.
- Convention Kick-Off: Offer an activity geared to kicking off a fun filled weekend. Events should be geared to creating a sense of community, provide opportunities to network with one another, and be fully accessible and inclusive.
- Open Bar Lounge
- Dance Party
- Off-site Tour
- Morning Continental Breakfast
- Pizza Lunch/Dinner
- Team Trivia
- Post Banquet Entertainment (keynote speaker, musician)
Chapters may choose to underwrite an event, meaning that they cover the expense of the event, without planning and executing the details. Or, chapters may select to both finance the event and organize/host it. For example, this year following the banquet, we will look forward to a Mystery Dinner Theater sponsored by the Golden Triangle Council of the Blind. Check out the article, “Calling All Actors” earlier in this publication for some of those event details.
To sponsor an event, or discuss additional options, please contact me directly by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 570-328-0545.
So that is a brief look into our plans for the 2015 PCB State Convention & Conference. Now you should plan to attend and have fun!
