As discussed in previous issues, organizations producing or overseeing the production of literary braille in the United States are mandated to convert braille production to the Unified English Braille code (UEB) as of January 1, 2016. At the 2014 PCB convention and conference, the PCB Braille and Accessible Formats Committee conducted an excellent training seminar in UEB which was well appreciated by attendees. At the request of many of PCB’s at-large members, the committee has agreed to conduct the seminar by phone.
The training will take place on Wednesday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. and will be conducted over PCB’s telephone conference line. The training will include several pages of braille examples. Since these materials will need to be sent to attendees by mail, it will be necessary for attendees to register. The registration deadline is Friday, January 30 at 3:00 p.m. To register, please call the PCB state office at 717-920-9999 or toll free 877-617-7407. Once you have registered, you will be given instructions on how to call in and the braille handouts will be mailed to you.
The PCB conference line is a long distance call so if you do not have unlimited long distance service you are urged to register early to be matched with an attendee who does, and who will three-way you into the call. When calling into the PCB state office to register, please indicate whether you subscribe to unlimited long distance service, and if so, whether you’d be willing to three-way an attendee into the call who does not.
If you are a reader of braille, I urge you to consider participating in this training opportunity. As an incentive, PCB will produce all 2015 braille convention materials using the UEB code.
