Happenings in Lancaster

By Yvonne Garris, Chapter President

Here at the Red Rose Council of the Blind we have been busy working on our new website. It will be on a WordPress platform, so it will be more accessible. We have also updated our mission statement. It now states “The mission of the Red Rose Council of the Blind is to be a forum to provide support, education, and advocacy for blind and vision impaired persons.”

Three of our members attended our area’s regional meeting in York. We had a good time reconnecting with old friends as we enjoyed some good food. After dessert we all got a chuckle when the first presenter spoke about diabetes. I think we were all moved by the second speaker’s comments about being grateful.

Recently, our biggest note worthy event was our participation in the Vision Corps Low Vision Fair. At our information table, we had a good time talking up our chapter and selling the True No Measure Cookbook. I also spoke with the local bus/Para transit company which will now be coming to speak at our June meeting.

We started our fundraiser of a sub sale at the fair. We have sold just about all of our 200 tickets at the time of this writing. The way the sale worked is we had 200 tickets to sell and we make $400. The person that buys the ticket has until November to use the ticket good for one sub at one of the area’s S. Clyde Weaver stores. This kind of sale works out well for us because we do not have to worry about making or delivering subs, just tickets.

The only other news from the Dutch country is that we have changed our meetings. We now meet the second Monday of the month from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Vision Corps. I am hoping this change will help our chapter grow and allow more members to attend meetings. Until next time, I wish everyone a safe and happy summer!
