The National Library Service’s Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) program allows library patrons to download the library’s accessible books and periodicals directly onto their own personal storage device for playback on a variety of digital book players in addition to the one provided by the NLS. The creation of mobile apps that can access the BARD system means that library users can now also download their reading materials directly onto smart phones and tablets. Users of iOS devices such as iPods, iPads, and iPhones can download this app from the iTunes store. Others with smart phones running Android OS 4.1 or later can download the app from the Google Play store. The latest Android version, BARD Mobile v1.0.2 can also be downloaded onto second generation or greater Kindle Fire devices through the Amazon app store. While all apps are free, patrons must have a BARD account. Contact your local NLS branch to sign up for an online account.
