By Cathy Long, Employment & Education Committee
The Education and Employment Committee has started a new adventure, of sorts. It is a blog. So what does that have to do with you? Well, you may want to suggest topics or make comments relevant to our blog’s purpose.
As described on the PCB website, “This blog provides informational postings on the topics of education and employment issues facing people with vision loss. The information aims to be useful and unique, by focusing on the specific education and training needed to prepare one for employment. It addresses the challenges and attitudes faced in educational institutions and the workplace by people with vision loss. It shares stories of real people who have succeeded despite such obstacles.” We have named the blog, “Learn and Earn.” Carla Hayes suggested the name and I think it perfectly describes what this blog is. While one goal of the blog is to share information and resources, the primary goal for creating this and the other PCB blogs is to offer a forum for discussion.
Here is how to access the “Learn and Earn” blog and participate in the discussion. Type the following web address into your browser: www.pcb1.org/learn-and-earn/. Near the top of the page, click on “Skip to Secondary Content.” This will scoot you down to the list of posts. Click on the one you want to read and navigate down to the secondary content again. Once you read the post, you will definitely want to comment, share your opinion, or provide an additional resource to people. To comment, navigate to the first edit box after the post. Enter your name and tab to the next edit box. Enter your email address and tab twice to get to the fourth edit box labeled “Comment.” Enter your comment here and tab once to click on the “Post it” button. Your comment will be sent to the moderator for approval. Do not be shy. We are a community looking to educate not only ourselves, but others who know little or nothing about people who are blind.
If you do not want to have to go to the blog to check for new posts, you can subscribe to all of the PCB blogs. I just subscribed myself. It was very easy to do. I just wrote my email address in the edit box where it says “Subscribe to PCB Blog” and clicked on “subscribe.” Now I should get e-mail messages as new content is added to the website.
As I mentioned earlier, anyone is able to contribute discussion topics and resources for the “Learn and Earn” blog. Please email your ideas directly to our Committee Chair, Al Pietrolungo, at email@example.com for his approval. Al will then submit the post to the website administrators for posting. Your comments to a posting can be done directly on the PCB website as described above.
For those who do not have access to the Internet, I would suggest that the chapter designate someone to print out useful information from the blog and have it read aloud so that these members can benefit, too. The blog topics may make good discussion topics for your chapter to explore. It is our intent to update the blog regularly. Subscribe to it and be in the know.
On a final note, hopefully you are planning to attend the 2015 Conference and Convention on October 15 through 18, 2015 in Harrisburg, PA. At that time, you will hear a presentation that the Education and Employment Committee has planned. It will give attendees an inside look at how Intermediate Units function and deliver services to students who are blind or visually impaired.
